Heritage and language

Cultural continuity, not nostalgia alone

Heritage work at the association is living work: language taught, music performed, memory documented and knowledge passed on.

Eight strands of heritage work

Syriac language

The association has supported cultural activities including Syriac-language learning initiatives, organised in cooperation with the Patriarchal Vicariate of the Archdiocese of Damascus.

Cultural memory

Collecting, describing and safeguarding the community's own record of its social and cultural life.

Music and folklore

Songs, dances and performance traditions carried between generations.

Community traditions

Seasonal occasions, family customs and the shared practices of community life.

Historical archive

Photographs, documents and posters held with a recorded source and rights status.

Intergenerational learning

Older and younger members learning together, so knowledge is transmitted rather than archived only.

Courses and workshops

Language courses, cultural workshops, music or folklore activities and heritage lectures.

Digital preservation

Digitising fragile material and describing it bilingually for future research.

Heritage work at the association is practical: classes that teach the language, evenings that pass on the songs, and an archive that keeps the community's memory in safe hands.
